BLOOD METALS

According to UN statistics, Congo is the Rape Capital of the world. 8 women or girls are raped every minute in the Congo. That is 48 women an hour, 1,152 women a day, 414,720 a year. Over the past 18 years of Rwanda and Uganda’s continued invasion, war and attempted occupation of Congo, nearly 7.5 MILLION women have been raped. Pictured above you can see how a village in Eastern Congo looked before the invasion; now it is a mine, where the land is ruined and children are forced to work. Congolese minerals have been valued at $24 trillion dollars according to IHS experts with more than 1,100 different minerals. The main ones include: copper, cobalt, silver uranium, lead, zinc, cadmium, diamonds, gold, tin, tungsten, manganese and a rare metal such as coltan. The latter, is one of the so called 3Ts, or tantalum, tungsten and tin, and together with gold they have been instrumental in driving deadly atrocities in the eastern DR Congo for nearly two decades now.

In 1885 King Leopold set up a private army, the infamous “Force Publique”, that he used to exploit rubber, ivory, gold, etc. for over 23 years. “Congo’s rubber boom” was vital to the nascent Western automobile industry. As demand increased, mass murders, rapes, mutilations, forced labor, etc. quickly became King Leopold army’s golden rule to boost the production. The world’s technological advancement is meaning that the Congo has to suffer once again, to create everything from mobile phones to computers: even space rockets are made out of the DRC’s precious and valuable minerals.

MEDIA BLACKOUT:
Throughout the duration of the war, media coverage has been minimal. Had you heard of the atrocities taking place in Congo before you read this Newsletter? TIME Magazine tried to bring the war to light (picture right) yet mainstream media has been unable to ‘oversee’ the neccessity of reporting on the world’s ‘Deadliest War’.
Sunday times, July 3, 2005 Christ Patten, former EuropeanCommissioner for external relations, called the war in Congo”probaby the most deadliest conflict on earth since World war two”
War.18e1b82.jpg
The war in Congo has been called the ‘greatest humanatarian crisis on the planet’. Government troops and rebel groups use rape as a weapon of war, making the DRC the ‘worst place to be a woman’ in the World. Please join our campaign for Peace and help us stop the violence towards Women in the Congo.
